Standard Overhead Join
Where an aerodrome has both left- and right-hand circuits, always enter the overhead with the aerodrome on your left, then reposition clear of the overhead for a right-hand circuit.

Most pilots carry out overhead joins correctly and safely. However, incorrect overhead joins do get reported – and while some involve visiting aircraft, several close calls have occurred where incorrect joining procedures created the potential for conflict. Here's a clarification of the correct technique.
At aerodromes that operate both left-hand and right-hand circuits, such as Foxpine and Omaka, the overhead join requires aircraft to approach and enter the overhead with the aerodrome and runways kept on the left-hand side.
Once established overhead, you have several options:
- orbiting overhead (left-hand only)
- joining the circuit
- vacating the area if required
The standard overhead join is designed to maximise wings-level time in the overhead and in the circuit, allowing an effective lookout and better situational awareness.
Why it matters
A conflict can arise if one aircraft enters the overhead correctly with the aerodrome on its left, while another enters overhead intending to join a right-hand circuit with the aerodrome on its right. The two aircraft may be on converging tracks with limited ability to see each other – a serious collision risk.
In summary
- If an aerodrome has both left- and right-hand circuits, always enter the overhead with the aerodrome and runways on the left.
- If a right-hand circuit is in use, fly clear of the overhead before repositioning to join the right-hand circuit.
- Continue to descend on the non-traffic side, make the same radio calls, and fly the same overall joining pattern.
If you're unsure about the procedure, have any questions or would like a refresher, have a chat with an instructor before departing. A short revision flight is also a great way to rebuild confidence and make sure your procedures are current.
Detailed guidance on the standard overhead join can be found in AIP New Zealand (AD 1.6).
