How to Change Circuit Direction
Joining doesn't commit you to landing – after one or two go-arounds consider another runway or diverting; change direction by extending downwind and turning 180° outwards.

Joining an aerodrome doesn't mean you have to land there – it's an assessment of whether the conditions are acceptable. Even if you do attempt a landing, going around once or even twice because of an unstable approach is always the right decision. After that, it's time to consider a different runway or diverting to a more suitable aerodrome.
If you need to change runways, there's a safe, standard way to do it:
- Extend downwind.
- Make a 180° turn in the opposite direction to the circuit you were flying.
- Rejoin downwind for the new runway.
This reverses your direction and positions you correctly for the new circuit. Only carry out this manoeuvre when you're certain of other aircraft positions, and always communicate clearly with circuit traffic so everyone is aware of your intentions.
